Dr. Shimpi has spent much of his life in the Triangle. He graduated magna cum laude from Duke University in 1996, and then graduated from medical school at the University of North Carolina in 2001. He returned to Duke to complete both his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship training. He was a gastroenterology faculty member at Duke from 2007 until 2023, focusing on esophageal disorders, and he co-founded the Esophageal Center at Duke. After a brief stint in Charleston, SC, he returned to the Triangle and joined UNC Rex in the summer of 2025.

He is focused on providing high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care in gastroenterology. He treats all disorders of general gastroenterology and hepatology, with a specific interest in esophageal disorders. He has been involved in shaping the future of gastroenterology through active participation in multiple committees of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
